General adult rule1,825 or 1,826 days of lawful residence: 365/366 days immediately before applying plus 1,460 days in the preceding eight years.

Not all time in Ireland is reckonable.

Reckonable residence is time lawfully spent in the State under an eligible permission. Check every IRP and ISD permission date, including gaps.

Normally counts

  • Qualifying Stamp 1, 1G, 3, 4 and 5 periods
  • Protection-based residence after status is granted

Normally does not count

  • Stamp 2 or 2A student permission
  • Visitor time
  • Time without valid permission
  • Time awaiting a protection decision
